About Gnomon Workshop
Welcome to The Gnomon Workshop, the industry leader in professional training for artists in the entertainment and design industries. Instructor: Jeff Patton
Jeff is a self-taught freelance digital artist and has been freelancing for the past six years. In that time he has worked on many projects, a lot of which have been mechanical illustrations for companies like Johnson Controls, Trane, Carrier, and Honeywell. More recently he has spent some time teaching on-site mental ray classes, which he enjoys as it has allowed him to travel around the country and meet a lot of really great people.
Jeff is an active member of several online forums such as CGsocietey (CGtalk), the Vizdepot, and Autodesk's "the AREA" website where he often tries to assist users with their mental ray related questions. In addition, last year he teamed up with Russell Thomas, owner of 3dallusions.com, to help create mrmaterials.com which is a free material repository for the mental ray community.

Gnomon Workshop: Exterior Environment Lighting and Rendering for Production

In this DVD, after setting up various production lighting rigs, Tim discusses the pros and cons of each solution. You will learn when to use one type of rig over another based on the goals of the project, as well as how to deal with the challenges that different scene elements create for your lighting setups. Tim will also show you how to render passes out of 3ds Max, composite them using Digital Fusion and set up your lighting in real-time using floating point image formats. Finally, you will learn how to set up a scene for multiple lighting scenarios including day, sunset and night shots. Software used: 3ds Max, Digital Fusion, V-Ray.

In this DVD Josh Nizzi reveals his techniques for designing robots. He demonstrates his entire robotic design process, from sketching concepts in Photoshop and creating a rough 3D model in 3ds Max, to rendering the model in HyperShot and finishing the design in Photoshop, Josh's approach is particularly valuable in a production setting because it enables the artist to deliver high quality concepts very quickly while simultaneously producing a proxy 3D model that could be used in pre-vis or as a starting point for a final model.

Maya Rendering & Compositing Techniques with Christophe Desse
1. Rendering Multiple Passes in Maya (Includes Scene Files)
Duration: 30 min
In this tutorial Christophe Desse shows how he uses Maya's Render Layers to give him more control over his final render. Using a production-ready scene file, Christophe covers Render Layers, Masks, Ambient Occlusion and settings for Mental Ray. This tutorial also includes all the files necessary for you to follow along and create your own hot-rod render.
2. Modeling a Muscle Car
Duration: 140 min
In this tutorial Christophe Dess shows us how he models the wheels for his super-charged cars. Using Maya's polygon modeling tools, Christophe creates all the components necessary wheel, rim, tire tread and hub. Once modeled, he uses XNormal and Photoshop to create a tread pattern which he later uses as a bump map. Finally, he lays out his Uvs and brings everthing together in a final render.
3. Mental Ray sketch and cell rendering in Maya 2009 (with Maya 2009 scene files)
Duration: 90 min
In this video Christophe Desse show his workflow for the creation of his sketch and cell rendering in Maya 2009. This tutorial includes setting up the shaders and all the steps necessary to render them in Maya. He also details the compositing and finaling stages in Photoshop.

Maya Rendering and Compositing Techniques [FS] [FJ] [FP]
1. Rendering Multiple Passes in Maya (Includes Scene Files)
Duration: 30 min
In this tutorial Christophe Desse shows how he uses Maya's Render Layers to give him more control over his final render. Using a production-ready scene file, Christophe covers Render Layers, Masks, Ambient Occlusion and settings for Mental Ray. This tutorial also includes all the files necessary for you to follow along and create your own hot-rod render.
2. Modeling a Muscle Car
Duration: 140 min
In this tutorial Christophe Dess shows us how he models the wheels for his super-charged cars. Using Maya's polygon modeling tools, Christophe creates all the components necessary wheel, rim, tire tread and hub. Once modeled, he uses XNormal and Photoshop to create a tread pattern which he later uses as a bump map. Finally, he lays out his Uvs and brings everthing together in a final render.
3. Mental Ray sketch and cell rendering in Maya 2009 (with Maya 2009 scene files)
Duration: 90 min
In this video Christophe Desse show his workflow for the creation of his sketch and cell rendering in Maya 2009. This tutorial includes setting up the shaders and all the steps necessary to render them in Maya. He also details the compositing and finaling stages in Photoshop.
