277. Tight Typography Tips #1 – “Background Check”
I think there was a moment in each of our lives when we discovered the almighty “vignette”… You can always tell when a person first learns the technique by going through their facebook albums… Yep, there it is, the weekend I first started “using” and “abusing”. I can’t tell you how many beginner typography projects I’ve seen where the creator just ads a vignette and expects everything to be ok… now.. I’m not bashing the vignette. In fact, I still use if for the vast majority of my animation projects… but the principle here is to be discreet, really, unnoticeable… unless you want it noticed, but the idea of this step is to have a complimentary background to help your text along.
278. Tight Typography Tips #2 – “Size Over Scale”
When you go to fit multiple words in place like a big puzzle, there is the immediate temptation to reach for that “S” key to adjust how big the word is compared to it’s neighbors. After Effects is smart and even if you scale up 700%, it’s still going to maintain smooth edges since it’s generated text and therefore still in it’s vector state… however, I still would encourage you to practice altering the size of the font rather then scale… By comparison your end result will be essentially identical, but depending on your plans for the text later, it’ll save you a headache if you start to animate with your scale at starting at 100% rather than 700%.
279. Tight Typography Tips #3 – “Give Me Some Space & Stay In Line”
At the end of the day, there are many aspects of animation (and all video production for that matter) that really can’t be entirely taught… good composition is one of those areas that CAN be learned, but requires God-given talent and a lot of practice to perfect.
280. Tight Typography Tips #4 – “Choose Your Next Move Wisely”
In the book “Creating Motion Graphics” by Chris and Trish Meyer, Chapter 14 talks about the camera and they say it’s generally a good idea to animate your subject or animate your camera, but if possible, not both. This just helps you keep your sanity as the composition progresses and the movement gets more complex. The more values you have keyframed, the harder it’s gonna be to go back and altering things later.
281. Tight Typography Tips #5 – “I Like The Way You Move”
One of the biggest elements that will bump your animation from amateur to amazing is the movement. This is the ultimate yet simplest test of your abilities in the field of animation… how well you animate. We always know when we see a polished, professional piece. The goal is for your animations to feel natural and not be overly noticeable or distracting. I often refer to our Premium Tutorial about the “12 Basic Principles of Animation” as it has been quiet influential in my growth as an artist. I actually went out and bought the book this originated from just so I’d have my own copy.
282. Tight Typography Tips #6 – “Stay Consistent”
Personally, this is probably the most difficult tip for me to follow. I always start the project and begin formulating a style and theme, then as creativity takes over and I continue to experiment with what else I could include or “Oh, what would that look like…”, I find myself going down a creative rabbit trail. Next thing you know the project is done, but it looks like four different artists played “Tag, You’re up now!” with my comp. By this I mean that my last five seconds look nothing like my first five seconds.
283. Tight Typography Tips #7 – “Get Ready… Preset… Go!”
There is this idea that if you’re a true artist, you have to create everything from scratch… I think this is an over compensation for not wanting to be one of those guys who has Video Copilot projects filling up their demo reels… Truth is, it’s totally fine to use stock footage, tutorial concepts, and animation presets…. just make sure those things are swimming in a pool of your own original content and you’ll be fine.
284. Tight Typography Tips #8 – “Let’s Get Graphical… Graphical”
Like I said at the beginning of the week, every project is different so this tip will look very different for each project, and each person. Try to use more then just words if you can. This will stretch your creativity and may even require you to seek some outside help in creating elements, but will be worth it in the end. Look for words that have implied attributes or characteristics. These sort of words let you have fun and add little elements to help convey their meaning.

302. How To Create A Timewarped Logo Reveal
In this tutorial we will only use built in AE plug-ins to achieve the final effect. We will learn how to divide a layer into numerous parts and then how to control the geometric aspects of those parts using the advanced features of Card Dance along with the Ease and Wizz script. We will use Timewarp to achieve slow-motion and we’ll also experiment with CC Vector Blur combined with several other effects to achieve a cool looking background.
303. How To Blow The Face Off A Zombie Pirate
Today’s tutorial will show you how to create a zombie headshot. We’ll start by first rotoscoping out the head using his makeup line as a guide. In this tutorial we will create an “awesome” 80?s title opener. This is created entirely within after effects with no external effects! We look at animating text with per-character 3D, the Radio Waves effect, creating interesting evolving backgrounds and advanced color correction techniques.
307. Shoot Off A 3D Plexus Particle Stream
The tutorial is on how to create a “pseudo” particle stream using Plexus. I say pseudo because it’s not really a particle stream, it just appears as one. The tools involved are Cinema 4d and After Effects with these 3rd party plugins: Plexus, Trapcode Particular and VCP Optical Flares although Particular and Optical Flares could be substituted with Particle World and any lens flare but I used particular and optical flares in the tut.

In this tutorial we are going to focus mostly on the simple built in tools in After Effects to create a nice broadcast looking lower third design. You are going to see how can create awesome designs using masks, gradients, shadows and bevels and more.
311. Elemental Combat Series: Electric Hands
Use the “Advanced Lightning” effect to composite some electric arcs in your hand. Then using a blur to make the lightning glow, we’ll add some light to the scene and use an expression to have the light flicker.
312. Elemental Combat Series: Fireball
Learn to create a fireball from a couple fire elements and then composite it into a scene that has been stabilized and tracked. You can use the same fireball to help light the scene as well.
